In trying to educate myself before buying a sewing machine, I've been trying to pick up some basic sewing books. This was a good one, with a lot of valuable basic info. This may be worth reading again or looking on Amazon for what is a similar book.
When I wanted to get into sewing after I found Craftster.org, I decided to get an older machine at a garage sale. Fortunately for me, one of our neighbors was involved in a charity that got a lot of them in donations to sell to raise funds. I got a decent Kenmore, 1970s model I think, and all the interior parts are metal (will last a good long time!). Just $25...so if I ever get bored of sewing I won't feel as bad as if I spent 10x the amount :)
Only downside is no fancy stitches, but so far I haven't missed those (it helps to have a serger, too ;)
